SET IT OFF – film screening

Leeds Queer Film Festival invite you to a FREE screening of Set It Off, an intense character–driven action film starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise.

Celebrating its 20th year, Set It Off reverts the tired stereotype of the white male action hero, focusing instead on a black lesbian protagonist Cleopatra Sims (Queen Latifah) who together with 3 friends are driven by a series of unwarranted personal events to commit bank robberies.

This iconic film was released at a time of tension following police violence against black taxi driver Rodney King and the 1992 LA riots. It includes strong themes of racial inequality, gun violence and police brutality towards black people.

A risk-taking, box office and critical success, the movie was filmed in 39 days under the budget of $9 million and has been praised for its observant portraiture of black female lives in the mid-1990s.

Set It Off also paved the way for all 4 female leads to develop successful film careers.

Leeds Queer Film Festival will begin the event with a short introduction.

Fresh popcorn and a range of cakes will be sold in the bar area of Wharf Chambers before the film.

Venue is fully wheelchair accessible. Please contact us in advance with any specific accessibility questions.)
